Super Saturday was a huge success in fund raising -- $7,000 for The Covenant House,The ARC of Chester County,The Elwyn School, and The Braintree Project (A school that Shipley is in partnership with in Africa).
Sports teams that played that weekend did well also:
Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country
Girls’ Exhibition Race Against Agnes Irwin.
Boys’ Exhibition Race Against The School at Church Farm.
Girls’ Soccer
The Shipley Girls’ Varsity Soccer team (5-2-2, 1-0 FSL) beat Agnes Irwin on Saturday, September 29 with a score of 4-0.
Seniors Leigh Ann Quill and Laura DiClemente helped Shipley jump out to an early lead. DiClemente served a corner kick to the far post, where Quill finished the first goal of the game. Only moments later, Quill returned the favor, picking off an errant pass and feeding DiClemente on the run, making the score 2-0. Adding to the damage, DiClemente sent a through ball to sophomore striker, Tara Stokes, who hit the post. Shipley junior, Ginny Wheeler, pounced on the rebound and drilled the ball into the back of the net before Irwin’s defenders could recover. Shipley continued to maintain the run of play through the second half, and was rewarded with one more goal when senior Dakota Carroll took a DiClemente feed, making the final score 4-0. Shipley's back four, consistently stingy throughout the game, locked down Irwin's attack for the remainder of the contest and helped junior goalkeeper, Maureen Gentry, celebrate her first shutout of the season.
Girls’ Tennis
Shipley was missing three key players for the match, which did not help against a very strong Agnes Irwin team. The Gators lost 7-0; however the score was not reflective of some of the matches. All the girls played very well but were in most cases simply outplayed.
Both senior Brittany Zoll, and junior Robyn Rubenstein made a great start but could not sustain the momentum.
Our freshman doubles team, who are used to playing at 2nd pair, played first doubles. They were slow to start, but found the momentum in the second set and narrowly missed going 3 sets.
#1 Singles Brittany Zoll lost 4,6 -- 0,6
#2 Singles Roby Rubenstein lost 6,4 -- 0,6 -- 6/10 tie breaker
#3 Singles Remi Rosenfeldt lost 1,6 -- 2,6
#4 Singles Kat Adkins lost 0, 6 -- 2,6
#1 Doubles Kaitlin Gottlieb & Kelsey Leon lost 2,6 -- 7/5 tie breaker
#2 Nikki Sullivan & Julie McConnell lost 2,6 -- 3,6
#3 Molly Conlin & Claudia DeBotton lost 4,6 -- 1,6
Shipley Varsity Boys Soccer Concludes Super Sports Day with a 4-0 Shut-Out!!
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Shipley Boys’ Soccer team (5-3-2, 0-1 FSL) took the field against their old Keystone League rival, The School at Church Farm. The Gators kept the ball moving for most of the first half but could not come up with a goal. Late in the first half, senior captain, Dan Mayernick, broke away from the Church Farm defense and scored his first goal of the day. The Gators came out in the second half ready to dominate and Mayernick opened the half by chipping in his second goal of the day. Freshman, Mike Stewart, followed up with a goal of his own. The second half continued with most of the play on Church Farm’s side of the field, in large part because of solid performances by freshman, Zach Arch, as well as senior captain goalkeeper, Matt Piltch. Mayernick concluded the day by scoring his third goa,l bringing the final score to 4-0. Contributing to the Gators’ offense were senior, Kon Kuznetsov, sophomore, Evan Seltzer, and freshman, Geoff Stewart.
