Still, fifteen minutes in, senior Laura DiClemente found fellow senior Jess Rosenbluth unmarked at the top of the six-yard box. Rosenbluth made a clean collection and pounded the ball into the back of the net before the Westtown defense was able to collapse on the ball. Westtown was quick to counter, picking up a loose ball in front of the Gators’ net and knotting up the score in the 22nd minute. The teams wrestled back and forth for the remainder of the first half, each squad creating a number of opportunities, but neither group was able to finish. Westtown struck first in the second half, again punching in a loose ball from close range, in the 52nd minute. Moments later, the Moose had an opportunity to shut the door on the Shipley squad when a series of excellent passes freed up Westtown's striker. An aggressive save by Shipley's junior goalkeeper, Maureen Gentry, allowed the Gators to stay within striking distance.
However, in the 71st minute, Shipley's DiClemente was dragged down near midfield. Setting up a long range free kick, DiClemente was able to loft the ball to a streaking senior Rebecca Yuska, who leapt above her mark as she neared the penalty stripe and drove a perfect header into the upper corner of the far post. With just under ten minutes left, Westtown began to push numbers forward, but strong play in the back, particularly from marking backs sophomore Kendall Roberts and freshman Lauren Touey, helped to stifle any chances before they became truly dangerous. With just over a minute to go, Rosenbluth picked up a free ball near midfield and fed a perfect ball to sophomore Tara Stokes down the right side. Stokes blew by the first defender, shook another defender in the box, and slid a beautiful pass through to a charging DiClemente. DiClemente slammed the ball down the middle of the net for an emphatic close to the game and the season. The Shipley School girls' varsity soccer team concludes the season with an overall record of 13-4-2, a league record of 9-1, and a second consecutive Friends Schools League Championship.
