Varsity Crew Competes in 3rd Annual Manny Flick Race
Sunday, 4/6/08

Shipley's crew team competed in the 3rd Annual Manny Flick race on the Schuylkill River on Sunday, April 6. This was the team’s first race of the season. Although the weather was a little cold and cloudy, the team performed very admirably. The boys’ Junior Eight (Ian Riley, Travis Rosenbluth, Drew Armstrong, Derek Timm-Brock, Ryan Archer, Cristian Wedgwood, Sam Fisher, Jeff Ford, and Robbie Walzer) won their race with an impressive time of 4:36.7, defeating two Eights from the perennial powerhouse Chaminade from New York. The boys’ JV Double (Miles Doolittle and Matt Hyman) also finished first in their race, defeating four other crews. Senior Alex Lerman competed in the Varsity Single, without having practiced in that boat, and finished with a respectable time of 6:30.4.

The Novice Boys Eight (Chris Taylor, Matt Lisle, Drew Schwartz, Carter Brown, Nate Colgan, Mason Richins, David Corenswet, Michael Umbrecht, and Kevin Delaney) finished in 5th place, with a time 5:39.2.

For the varsity girls, seniors Alicia Weigel and Kendall Graham placed first in their heat for the Lightweight Double with a time of 6:02.82, after only five days of practicing together. Kristina Niedermayer, Morgane Hayes, Julia Fisher, Rachel Johnson, and Jenny Colgan placed second in their heat for the Varsity Four with a time of 5:42.33, narrowly missing first place. Ali Schwartz steered a good course for her JV Eight (Bonnie Rogers, Raffaella Giampaolo, Audrey Allen, Natalie Molta, Hannah Scott, Maddie Krick, Maura Watson, and Louisa Raymond), who placed fourth in their heat with a time of 5:30.

The Novice Girls rowed in the Novice Four event (Mackenzie Peterson, Julia Tyson, Emma Godfrey, Emily Carter, and Nadia Kale—cox). The team used the prominent tailwind to their advantage and raced to a second place finish, edging out Vineland, Absegami, and Notre Dame.
