Girls' Softball FSL Championships

Shipley -10
George School - 0

The Shipley girls' softball team pitched their second consecutive shutout of the FSL playoffs as they blanked visiting  George School 10-0 on Saturday, May 19th, to become this year's Friends Schools League Champions. The game was particularly significant, as it was Michelle Then's last as Shipley softball coach. After 13 years at Shipley and four league championships, Michelle is moving to North Carolina, where her husband has a new job.

Shipley junior Jess Iacobucci and freshman Adrienne Drummond combined for a one hit shut-out. Iacobucci pitched for the first four innings, with  Drummond taking over for two innings later in the game - she struck out five. Senior catcher, Alex King, made a spectacular play, throwing out a George School player who attempted to steal second.

Hitting well for Shipley were freshman Jenn Nichols who batted 2 for 3 with a double, homerun and 2 RBIs; Junior Rebecca Yuska  went 2 for 4  with a double and 2 RBIs, and senior Alex King 1 for 3, hitting a double and racking up 2 RBIs. Junior Dakota Carroll bunted twice and went 2 for 3. Shipley ended the  season with a 12-5 overall record and 11-1 in the FSL.

The Shipley boys’ varsity tennis team beat Friends’ Central School Thursday, May 17 to win the FSL Championship. The match remained incredibly close throughout its duration, with Shipley winning by only one match on the singles side

Third singles player Steve Warner ’08 looked to be in for a marathon match after taking the first set into a tiebreaker (7-6), but was able to build momentum in his second set to win quickly (6-1).

With all other matches over and the overall score tied at 2-2, all attention turned to 1st singles player Jon Thaler ‘08, who was in his second set after taking the first 6-4. Boys’ Baseball Moves on to League Finals
Shipley- 12
Friends’ Central- 6

While the previous day’s game was rained out, the weather stayed clear on Thursday for Shipley and Friends’ Central. Disappointed by Wednesday’s delay, the Gators were eager to get the game underway and hopeful to head to the finals.

The first inning and the top of the second went by quickly. Except for one walk by Shipley’s Ted Schroede ‘07, no runners got on base. However, in the bottom of the second, Friends’ Central was able to get some hits and scored off two errors made by Shipley.

After a quick pep talk from their coach, Bryan Bendowski, the Gators went up to bat. They, too were able to score four runs, with Schroeder being the first on base and Eli Branzburg ’07 getting the first two RBIs. Shipley  held Friends’ Central to no runs in the bottom of the third, and continued by scoring five runs in the top of the fourth. After having nine runs scored on them in the last two innings, Friends’ Central could not recover and was only able to score two runs combined  in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The game ended with Shipley on top, with a score of twelve to six, improving to 14-6 overall and 9-2 in FSL play.

The Shipley players look forward to their chance for a FSL title at GFS in the finals on Saturday, May 19th at 2:00  pm.

Boys’ Lacrosse Puts Up a Fight in Semi-Finals
Shipley-4
Friends’ Central-7

The Shipley School boys’ lacrosse team (10-6, 3-3 FSL) ended the season with an intense game against Friends’ Central in the FSL Semi-Finals. The Shipley boy’ fought hard and it was not an easy win for Friends’ Central. The game started rough for the Gators when Friends’ Central scored 3 goals in the opening minutes of the first quarter before the game was rescheduled because of Wednesday’s weather conditions.

When the game restarted on Thursday with 4:44 to go in the first quarter, the Shipley defense held strong and kept the ball out of the Gators’ goal with the help from Shipley goalie Jack Tanenbaum ‘09. The offense took over with the first goal on an assist from Sam Burwell ’07. Will Lawlor ’09 hit the back of the net for the Gators and then followed up with another goal later in the game when things got tight for Shipley. Junior attackman, John Hird ‘08, led the offense and contributed a goal and an assist for the Gators and David Bartholomew ‘07 added a goal for the Gators as well. Defensive middie, Pete Cianelli ‘07, helped  in keeping the ball on Friends’ Central’s side of the field with strong support from Sam Foster ‘07, Ethan Magill ‘08, and Pat Sullivan and Will Strathmann, both 09.

After the first two goals, it looked as though the Gators would be poised for a comeback. However, as the game progressed, Friends’ Central took the lead again. Shipley’s Tanenbaum saved 9 out of 16 shots in goal but the game ended with a Friends’ Central victory of 7-4.
