2008 Spring Sports Preview
Co-Ed Varsity Golf
2007 Highlights—Overall Record: 6-6, FSL Record: 6-4

After a strong 2007 season and under the guidance of first-year coach Michael Dubrosky and White Manor Country Club’s professional, Marc Levine, The Shipley co-ed golf team is looking to win back the Friends Schools League Gold Championship that they won in 2006.

Led by senior co-captain Charlie Dalrymple and junior co-captain Max Kiely, the Gators are poised for a stellar 2008 campaign with the support of juniors Dan Friedman and David Nichols. Playing most of their matches at home course White Manor Country Club, Shipley golfers hope to earn their second FSL title in three years in the league.

Boys’ Varsity Baseball
2007 Highlights—Overall Record 14-8, FSL Record: 9-3

The 2007 Shipley baseball team tied a school record with 14 wins, while reaching the FSL championship game for the third straight year. Even with the graduation of nine seniors last year, the team will look to return to the championship game with a mix of seasoned veterans and talented underclassman. The team returns eight players with varsity experience and a group of solid underclassman that will push for starting roles.

Senior co-captains David Balderston (1B, P) and Mike Keiser (3B, P) will lead the Gators. Balderston was selected to the FSL 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All Main Line. Keiser has been a regular at third base since his sophomore year. Both should keep the Gators solid at the corners. Returning sophomore starter John McCann (SS) and junior Corey Rogoff (P, DH) will also be counted on heavily to contribute. McCann started every game as a freshman and showed tremendous skill while playing many positions. Rogoff went 2-0 on the mound last year in limited innings and was a regular in the middle of the line-up as a hitter.

The Gators will open up their season on March 11 against The Haverford School. The team will then head south to The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC for a week of competition against teams from North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and Arkansas.

Players to Watch: senior Henry Inman (P), juniors Aaron Melman (INF) and Sam Nofer (OF), sophomores Andrew White (P, OF), Will Culp (C), Jon Culp (OF), and Dylan Smith (INF), and freshmen Conrad Ambrette (P, OF) and Kyle Rosenbluth (C, OF),

Girls’ Varsity Softball
2007 Highlights—Overall Record: 12-5, FSL Record: 11-1
Friends Schools League Champions

The Shipley softball team earned its second consecutive Friends Schools League title in 2007. The team is returning nine varsity players from last year’s championship squad, including senior tri-captains Jess Iacobucci, Rebecca Yuska, and Dakota Carroll. Iacobucci, a 1st Team All-League selection in 2006, will return to action in top form after suffering a knee injury last season. Shortstop Yuska will lead the infield and add speed and power to the Shipley offense. Carroll will contribute with her solid play in center field and at the plate.

Also returning are three juniors: pitchers Julia Schwartz and Adrienne Drummond, and outfielder Ginny Wheeler. Schwartz (2007 co-MVP) carried the Gators in 2007 to their Friends Schools League title and their 12-win season, stepping in for Iacobucci and Drummond while they were injured. Schwartz brings speed on the bases and power at the plate, making her an offensive force to be reckoned with; she also plays first base when she’s not on the mound. Drummond will also be back on the mound and playing infield. Wheeler should contribute greatly this year at the plate and in the outfield. New to the team this year is Maureen Gentry. Gentry will step in as catcher to fill the void created by the graduation of Alex King.

The Gators will return sophomores Jenn Nichols, Angela DelConte, and Joanie Thompson, who all saw limited action last year as freshmen, but should have a greater defensive role this year. Shipley welcomes a new class of talented freshmen and is waiting to see what they can contribute to the varsity squad. The Gators will start the season against Notre Dame on March 18.

Girls’ Lacrosse
2007 Highlights—Overall Record: 12-3-1, FSL Record: 7-1
Friends Schools League Champions

The Shipley girls’ varsity lacrosse team is looking forward to the 2008 season with high hopes of getting to the Friend Schools League playoffs again after winning the 2007 FSL Championship against Friends Central. Although the team graduated six seniors, including two top scorers and two key defensive players, the Gators will still be strong under the new leadership of senior tri-captains, Jess Rosenbluth, Leigh Ann Quill, and Jenny Kley.
The Shipley girls look forward to great things from other returning players such as seniors Norah Maxwell and Christina Zipf, juniors Anna Heywood and Chase Markee, and sophomore Tara Stokes. Junior Elizabeth Maltz and sophomore Ali Piltch will provide strong protection in the goal.
The Gators will look to Kley and Maxwell to help secure the defense and Rosenbluth, Quill, and Stokes to lead the offense. A strong set of JV players moving up and a strong freshman class will also contribute to the team’s success this season. The team will travel to Orlando, Florida for spring break training to prepare for the upcoming season.

The Shipley girls open their 2008 home schedule on the turf fields in Gladwyne on Wednesday, April 2 against Lower Merion High School.

Boys’ Lacrosse
2007 Highlights—Overall Record: 10-6, FSL Record: 3-3
Friends Schools League Semi-Finalists

After finishing the 2007 season with a 10-6 record and a trip to the Friends Schools League Semi-Finals, the Shipley boys’ lacrosse team looks to improve with added depth and some veteran experience in 2008. This year’s senior class has won 41 games in the past three seasons, along with two league championships and two state playoff appearances. The Shipley boys will travel to Disney’s Wide World of Sports to take on teams from Colorado for spring training and return to Pennsylvania to make a run at the Friends School League and NE League titles.

The offense will be led by senior co-captain and four-year starter John Hird, who is Shipley’s all-time leading scorer with 131 goals. Hird finished his junior year campaign putting up some impressive numbers, with 48 goals and 23 assists for 71 points. Hird has been 1st Team All-NE League for the past three seasons and 1st Team All-FSL in 2006 and 2007. Senior midfielder Jack Hilzinger will also be looked to on the offense after scoring 8 goals and adding 5 assists his junior year. Junior Will Lawlor (22g, 11a -2007) has been one of Shipley’s leading goal scorers during the past two seasons and will be key to Shipley’s success this season. Juniors Charlie Gaulin and Justin Miller will need to step into key feeding and shooting roles as midfielders and attackers. Freshman Julius Mouser will add depth to the attack and speed to Shipley midfield lines along with sophomore Danny Brown.

The Shipley defense returns all but one starter this season and will be led by senior co-captain Ethan MaGill (1st Team All-NE League) and junior transfer Arne Andersen, who both play long-stick middie and close defense. The defense will be anchored by juniors Pat Sullivan and Will Strathmann, senior Jasper Jarden, and sophomore James Brownstein. Juniors Brad Harris and Nate Kuntz will also add depth to this experienced group. Rounding out the defense will be junior goalies Jack Tanenbaum and Andrew Mason. Tanenbaum started every game his sophomore year, contributing to 10 winning games with a solid .700 save percentage. Mason put up a .670 save percentage in 2007.

The boys will open their season at Shipley’s turf fields in Gladwyne on March 18 at 3:45 pm when they will take on Spring-Ford High School.

Boys’ Varsity Tennis
2007 Highlights—Overall Record: 7-6, FSL Record: 5-2
Friends Schools League Champions
The Shipley boys’ tennis team enters the 2008 season hoping to once again capture the Friends Schools League title. Led by senior co-captains Jon Thaler and Vivek Stalam, the Gators bring back lots of experience after graduating only one senior last season.

The Gators will bank once again on the two captains and senior Steven Warner to lead the way. Thaler (1st Team All-Main Line, 1st Team All-League), Vivek Stalam (1st Team All-League), and Steve Warner (2nd Team All-League) will compete again for the three top singles positions.

Though the Gators struggled to win matches at doubles last season, returning seniors Mike Wadden, Francis Lora, Jeff Gordon, T.J. Kiely, Colin Chapin, Julian Blunt, and junior Zach Laskin, who all played doubles in 2007, are all better equipped now to compete at the doubles positions and ease the pressure to win for the singles players.

Boys’ Crew
The Shipley boys’ crew, led by co-captains Alex Lerman, Ryan Archer, and Anders Engman are looking forward to improving upon a successful 2007 spring season. This past fall, the boys’ varsity four finished 3rd out of 32 boats in the Navy Day Regatta. The boys also raced as a Junior Eight in the King’s Head Regatta and took the gold medal. They have been working extremely hard in the off-season in the hopes of winning a National Championship this spring.

Girls’ Crew
The Shipley girls’ crew, led by senior captains Jenny Colgan, Alicia Weigel, and Lia Wertheimer, are hoping to build upon the momentum started this past fall season. At the King’s Head Regatta, the girls finished with very impressive 2nd and 4th place finishes.
