Co-Ed Varsity Golf2007 Highlights—Overall Record: 6-6, FSL Record: 6-4 After a strong 2007 season and under the guidance of first-year coach Michael Dubrosky and White Manor Country Club’s professional, Marc Levine, The Shipley co-ed golf team is looking to win back the Friends Schools League Gold Championship that they won in 2006. Led by senior co-captain Charlie Dalrymple and junior co-captain Max Kiely, the Gators are poised for a stellar 2008 campaign with the support of juniors Dan Friedman and David Nichols. Playing most of their matches at home course White Manor Country Club, Shipley golfers hope to earn their second FSL title in three years in the league.
Senior co-captains David Balderston (1B, P) and Mike Keiser (3B, P) will lead the Gators. Balderston was selected to the FSL 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All Main Line. Keiser has been a regular at third base since his sophomore year. Both should keep the Gators solid at the corners. Returning sophomore starter John McCann (SS) and junior Corey Rogoff (P, DH) will also be counted on heavily to contribute. McCann started every game as a freshman and showed tremendous skill while playing many positions. Rogoff went 2-0 on the mound last year in limited innings and was a regular in the middle of the line-up as a hitter. The Gators will open up their season on March 11 against The Haverford School. The team will then head south to The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC for a week of competition against teams from North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and Arkansas. Players to Watch: senior Henry Inman (P), juniors Aaron Melman (INF) and Sam Nofer (OF), sophomores Andrew White (P, OF), Will Culp (C), Jon Culp (OF), and Dylan Smith (INF), and freshmen Conrad Ambrette (P, OF) and Kyle Rosenbluth (C, OF),
Also returning are three juniors: pitchers Julia Schwartz and Adrienne Drummond, and outfielder Ginny Wheeler. Schwartz (2007 co-MVP) carried the Gators in 2007 to their Friends Schools League title and their 12-win season, stepping in for Iacobucci and Drummond while they were injured. Schwartz brings speed on the bases and power at the plate, making her an offensive force to be reckoned with; she also plays first base when she’s not on the mound. Drummond will also be back on the mound and playing infield. Wheeler should contribute greatly this year at the plate and in the outfield. New to the team this year is Maureen Gentry. Gentry will step in as catcher to fill the void created by the graduation of Alex King. The Gators will return sophomores Jenn Nichols, Angela DelConte, and Joanie Thompson, who all saw limited action last year as freshmen, but should have a greater defensive role this year. Shipley welcomes a new class of talented freshmen and is waiting to see what they can contribute to the varsity squad. The Gators will start the season against Notre Dame on March 18.
The Shipley girls open their 2008 home schedule on the turf fields in Gladwyne on Wednesday, April 2 against Lower Merion High School.
The offense will be led by senior co-captain and four-year starter John Hird, who is Shipley’s all-time leading scorer with 131 goals. Hird finished his junior year campaign putting up some impressive numbers, with 48 goals and 23 assists for 71 points. Hird has been 1st Team All-NE League for the past three seasons and 1st Team All-FSL in 2006 and 2007. Senior midfielder Jack Hilzinger will also be looked to on the offense after scoring 8 goals and adding 5 assists his junior year. Junior Will Lawlor (22g, 11a -2007) has been one of Shipley’s leading goal scorers during the past two seasons and will be key to Shipley’s success this season. Juniors Charlie Gaulin and Justin Miller will need to step into key feeding and shooting roles as midfielders and attackers. Freshman Julius Mouser will add depth to the attack and speed to Shipley midfield lines along with sophomore Danny Brown. The Shipley defense returns all but one starter this season and will be led by senior co-captain Ethan MaGill (1st Team All-NE League) and junior transfer Arne Andersen, who both play long-stick middie and close defense. The defense will be anchored by juniors Pat Sullivan and Will Strathmann, senior Jasper Jarden, and sophomore James Brownstein. Juniors Brad Harris and Nate Kuntz will also add depth to this experienced group. Rounding out the defense will be junior goalies Jack Tanenbaum and Andrew Mason. Tanenbaum started every game his sophomore year, contributing to 10 winning games with a solid .700 save percentage. Mason put up a .670 save percentage in 2007. The boys will open their season at Shipley’s turf fields in Gladwyne on March 18 at 3:45 pm when they will take on Spring-Ford High School.
The Gators will bank once again on the two captains and senior Steven Warner to lead the way. Thaler (1st Team All-Main Line, 1st Team All-League), Vivek Stalam (1st Team All-League), and Steve Warner (2nd Team All-League) will compete again for the three top singles positions. Though the Gators struggled to win matches at doubles last season, returning seniors Mike Wadden, Francis Lora, Jeff Gordon, T.J. Kiely, Colin Chapin, Julian Blunt, and junior Zach Laskin, who all played doubles in 2007, are all better equipped now to compete at the doubles positions and ease the pressure to win for the singles players.
