Harriton captured first place in 5 of the first 6 events, but Shipley lapped up enough points to keep the score close, at 43-49. In the early part of the meet, Shipley sophomore Kelly Sullivan won the 200 free. Shipley outscored Harriton in the 100 butterfly by placing 2nd, 3rd and 4th. In the second half of the meet, Sullivan won the 100 free, senior Laura Butera won the 100 back, and senior Emily Butera won the 100 breast. These three swimmers also teamed up with junior Kelly Gagnon to win the 200 free relay. Going into to last event, the 400 free relay, Shipley was ahead by just one point. The meet would go to the team who won the final relay. Placing 2nd and 3rd would not be enough. Junior Kayleigh Butera, sophomore Jen Smith, and senior Laura Butera swam the first three legs for Shipley. The two teams were even when the final swimmers hit the water. Kelly Sullivan swam stroke-for-stroke with her counterpart for the first half, then pulled away in the last 50 yards to clinch the race and the meet. Sullivan’s split was 59.9, breaking the one-minute mark for the first time. In a meet decided by just three points, almost everyone who swam made a difference. Junior Glynnis Stevenson out-touched Harriton swimmers in both the 200 free and the 100 fly, which earned critical points for the 4th and 5th place slots. Sophomore Carolyn Dilsheimer took 3rd place in her very first Shipley race. Freshman Nicole Surman and junior Kayleigh Butera each swam four events, including the 500 free. The girls’ next meet is Friday, December 7, against Upper Merion.
