2007 Fall Sports Preview
Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey
2006 Season Highlights: Friends Schools League Champions; 7-1-1 FSL Record, 10-6-1 Overall

The Shipley Field Hockey team captured their second consecutive Friends Schools League Championship title during the 2006 season. The girls shut out both teams in play-off contention, beating Friends Select 3-0 in the semi-finals and GFS 2-0 in the final.

Senior Co-Captain Charlie Thompson only allowed 3 goals in league play for the entire season. Charlie and Senior Co-Captain Alex King were both named MVPs for the 2006 season, received 1st team All League Honors, and were selected 1st Team All Main Line and 1st Team All Main Line Life. Alex King will continue her field hockey career at Union College, and Charlie Thompson hopes to play at the University of Pennsylvania. Other players awarded with honors were juniors Katie Flowers and Brittany Boesenhofer, as well as freshman Jill Keeney.

The Gators’ Captains for the 2007 season are Katie Flowers, Brittany Boesenhofer, and Alison Redding—three great leaders and contributors to the team. Also returning to the Shipley squad are Elise Mercier, Julia Schwartz, Jill Keeney, Sam Wolfson, Joanie Thompson, Eva Tanenbaum, Chase Markee, Caroline Woodruff, and Kendal Graham.

It will be very difficult to replace Charlie in goal and Alex in the back field, but Shipley’s middies and forward line are all returning with great speed and stick skills. The girls play extremely well together and have great team camaraderie.

Girls’ Varsity Soccer
2006 Season Highlights: Friends Schools League Champions; 9-0-0 FSL Record

After returning to the Friends Schools League Championship game for the second time in as many years, Shipley was elated to finally capture the title in 2006, providing graduating senior standouts Rae Goldstein and Brooke Stokes with an appropriate send-off.

With a sound group of returning veterans, the team hopes to continue to build on last year's success. Led by Co-Captains and FSL All-League selections Dakota Carroll, Laura DiClemente, Jess Rosenbluth, and Rebecca Yuska, the Gators will continue to play with a potent offensive attack, especially with the continued improvement of sophomore Tara Stokes and senior Leigh Ann Quill.

The keeper position still remains a question mark, but the team can anticipate the return of three standout defenders. In addition to center back Rebecca Yuska, marking backs Kendall Roberts (sophomore) and Jenny Kley (senior) will provide consistent defensive presence on the pitch.

While the team is able to field impact players at several positions, look for Jess Rosenbluth (Main Line Times Player of the Year) and Laura DiClemente to control the pace of the game with their midfield play. Dakota Carroll will continue her assault on Shipley's scoring records from her place atop the offense, and Rebecca Yuska will dominate the defensive half of the pitch.

Boys’ Varsity Soccer
2006 Season Highlights: Friends Schools League Champions; 9-0 FSL Record; 19-1 Overall Record

In 2006, under first-year head coach Thom Schauerman and assistants Sean Costello, Keith Cappo, and Nate Schwartz, Shipley boys' soccer went an impressive 19-1, earning the Friends Schools League Championship title and winning 19 straight games. In 20 games, the Shipley Gators scored an unbelievable 79 goals and only conceded 16. At the end of the season, the Gators were ranked 14th out of over 140 boys’ high school soccer teams in southeastern Pennsylvania by the South Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association (SEPSA).

The success of the 2006 season was due to a consistent team effort and never fell upon the shoulders of just one player. Still, the Gators will miss the senior leadership of All-State players David Bartholomew and B.J. Glenn, as well as the strong defensive trio of Sam Foster, Tom O'Brien, and Pete Cianelli in the back. Of course, there are other standouts who will play with the Gators for one more season, including 13 returning varsity players.

Players to Watch
Captain Dan Mayernick: 28 goals & 7 assists to be Shipley’s leading goal scorer in 2006. Dan will lead the Shipley Gators from the attack. He has a laser shot that is accurate and his work rate cannot be matched as he hunts down defenders and forces turnovers. He is being recruited by many Division 1 schools for 2008.
Captain Nikhil Gregg: 10 goals & 12 assists. Nikhil Gregg can control any midfield. With his speed, vision, and ball skills he is trouble for any team to match up against. He can score goals as well as he sets them up. Nikhil Gregg is being recruited by many top Division 1 schools.
Captain Matthew Piltch: 2006 Stats – 90% save percentage, 9 shutouts, allowed 6 goals in 19 games, 87 total saves. Matt will be a huge key to the 2007 season’s success as he leads the young but skilled Gator defense from the goal.
Dalton Carroll: Dalton Carroll scored an impressive 10 goals and assisted on 18 in the 2006 season. These numbers would be impressive for a senior—Dalton is a rising sophomore. His technical and tactical ability put him in a league above many players his age. Dalton is also a member of the U-15 National Team.
Kon Kuznetsov: Scored 6 goals in his first year with the Shipley soccer team. He dominates the wings with his size and speed. He is a force in the air. Kon will be one of the go-to men in 2007.
Captain Jeff Gordon: Jeff Gordon will play all over the field for the Gators. Last season he scored some important goals that helped win games over Interact rival Malvern Prep. He can play in the midfield or in the back and will lead his team regardless of his position both on and off the field.

Girls’ Varsity Tennis
2006 Season Highlights: 2nd Place Friends Schools League, 6-2 FSL Record
The Shipley girls’ varsity tennis team heads into the 2007 season with a strong but depleted team after losing five seniors. Key players returning this season are senior Co-Captains Julia Fisher and Clare Kuensell. Other players to watch out for will be seniors Remi Rosenfeldt, Brittany Zoll, Jamie Goldstein, and junior Robyn Rubenstein. The Gators hope to have a strong 2007 season after last year’s 2nd place finish in the league with a 6 – 2 record, only to lose in the semi-finals of the 2006 FSL Championships.

Boys’ Cross Country
The boys’ team is looking forward to a great 2007season headed by captains Nate Kuntz and Colin Chapin. With a seasoned squad of runners, the team is looking to make an impact this coming season. Nate Kuntz will continue his quest for the 16-minute 5k, while Steve Petro provides under-20 (minute) firepower to the team’s roster. With the addition of some talented freshman, as well as new upper-classmen runners, the team expects significant gains this year.

Girls’ Cross Country
The girls’ varsity cross country squad is reeling this year from the loss of five senior runners. Team captain Charlotte Nicholas will be one to look out for as she steps into the limelight.
