Senior Service Project

Overview
The mission statement of Shipley encourages in all students "a compassionate participation in the world...and concern for others at school and in the larger community." The goal of the SSP is to provide seniors with an opportunity to engage in sustained community service. We want seniors to have direct experience helping members of the community through service organizations. In addition, we encourage seniors to try something they have not done before in a new environment. The SSP does not fulfill the community service requirement, seniors will not be allowed to pursue independent projects, and all projects must be within one hour driving distance of Shipley.

Some possible non-profit or service organizations include hospitals, veterinarian hospitals or advocacy groups, nursing homes, specialized schools/day care centers, public access arts organizations, environmental organizations, community centers, historical societies, historical parks, museums, homeless shelters, and health care advocacy foundations.

During the SSP weeks, students are expected to work a minimum of 7 hours a day, five days a week. Exceptions to these days and/or hours are made for holidays and required school activities, including athletic commitments.

The 2008 SSP will begin May 12th and end May 30th.
