Expectations and Grading

Expectations of students during the Senior Service Project:

  • Maintain a timesheet and weekly log of expectations, experiences, trials and tribulations
  • Initiate contact with your Shipley sponsor once a week, either by telephone or e-mail
  • Schedule a site visit for your Shipley faculty sponsor
  • Write a paper that synthesizes your SSP experience
  • Make an oral presentation to faculty and peers that summarizes your SSP experience

Based on the above requirements, students will earn a grade of either pass with honors, pass, or fail. In order to pass with honors, a student must earn at least 18 points with no zeroes. It is also the expectation that a student who achieves pass with honors has demonstrated initiative and responsibility in all aspects of the project. In order to pass, students must earn at least 12 points with no zeroes. Fail will be awarded to any student who earns fewer than 12 points or a zero on any single one of the requirements. Failure to complete an SSP requirement (submission of time sheet/log; maintaining contact with faculty sponsor; submission of paper on time; presentation) will result in a zero. All seniors must pass their SSP in order to graduate. In the past, students who have not passed their SSP have been asked to repeat it after graduation in order to receive their Shipley diploma.

Time sheet and Log (0 – 5 points)

  • A weekly log should be thoughtful and consistent with regards to both quality and quantity of entries. Entries should reflect an experience that builds on each of the previous days. Entries may be made on a daily or weekly basis. Timesheets and logs must be turned in with the final paper.

Contact with sponsor (0 – 3 points)

  • Students must be in weekly contact with their Shipley faculty sponsor by telephone or e-mail.

Shipley Sponsor Visit (0 – 2 points)

  • During the visit, students will show their sponsors what they have been working on, introduce them to the people with whom they have been working, and provide the sponsors with some insights into how the placement has been going.

Paper (0 – 5 points)

  • The paper must be thoughtful, clear and well written. It should not be an account of your daily experiences, but rather a synthesis and analysis of those experiences. Consider your impact on the organization and the organization’s impact on you. The paper should be at least 1500 words.

Oral presentation (0 – 5 points)

  • Presentations should be well planned, rehearsed, interesting and interactive. Creativity is a plus. A member of the Shipley faculty will observe and evaluate your presentation; he/she will then pass this portion of your grade along to your faculty sponsor.
