Number of volunteers needed:
6

Duties required of the volunteer:
Arts Bridges is an exciting four year project to improve the literacy skills of 4th and 5th graders at the Julia de Burgos Bilingual School through original poetry, visual art and music composition.  In May, our students will be creating a final project book of individual poems illustrated with photographs of their neighborhood. Students will also be completing production of a song CD based on their collaborative writings.  3 Shipley volunteers could be assigned to help complete the poetry book project, including layout, printing and collating; 3 are needed to help students with CD production, replication, printing and packaging. Volunteers may also assist de Burgos students in presenting their work as a live performance to the school community.

Special skills that will be helpful for a volunteer to have:
Rapport with children of differing ages, cultures and abilities is a must.  Solid writing and editorial skills would be helpful, as would an interest in hands-on application of Mac-based page layout and new media programs. Fluency in Spanish would be helpful, but not necessary.

Typical hours of employment:
Service would take place, in part, at the Julia de Burgos School, 4th and Lehigh in North Philadelphia. Remaining volunteer time would be spent at COSACOSA in Manayunk with flexible hours during our regular business day, 9 am to 3 pm.

Special circumstances ie. travel, security clearance or background check required:
Volunteers may commute with COSACOSA staff to the de Burgos School when necessary.
