Day of Silence On April 27, 2006 Shipley’s Gay Straight Alliance held its annual Day of Silence in the Upper School. The Day of Silence is a nationwide, school-based protest of the violence and harassment that is so often experienced by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender students and the environment of shame and ridicule that keeps these people silent. By observing silence for a single school day, students and faculty created a powerful statement about the “silence” that so many LGBT students are forced to endure daily. For those LGBT members of our own community, it provided a strong show of solidarity and support. If you’d like more information, go to www.dayofsilence.org. Stickers were made available for those participating in the day so that teachers and classmates could respect participants’ silence. Stickers were also made available for both students and teachers to wear if they were not able to observe silence but wanted to be supportive of making Shipley a safe place for all, regardless of sexual orientation.
