GSA (Gay Straight Alliance)
Shipley's Gay-Straight Alliance provides a forum for discussion of issues pertaining to sexual orientation -- gay, bi-sexual, transgendered, questioning and straight students are all welcome. The small group of students doesn’t have a dedicated time to meet since all the GSA members are busy with other groups during activity period. Occasionally the group sponsors events. This winter we sponsored a service trip to "Gay Bingo," a major fund raiser for the Philadelphia Aids Alliance held at the Gershman Y in Philadelphia. Last year, with Jamie Neilson's help, the group made a short video about student and faculty opinions regarding gay students which was shared with faculty and students.
SURE (Students United for Racial Equality)
SURE is a group of students who meets once a week during the activities period. Sandi Richards is the current faculty facilitator. The mission is as follows:
"We the Students United for Racial Equality strive to support and affirm the multicultural students and initiatives of The Shipley School and to increase awareness and acceptance of cultural and ethnic differences among all members of the school community."
