Welcome Back Barbecue September 10, 2005
Our Seventh Annual Multicultural Parents Association Welcome Back Barbecue on September 10th was a huge success. With nearly 300 people in attendance there were plenty of opportunities to catch up with old friends or to meet new families. The event was opened up with a welcome from Diversity Committee member and teacher, Chet Blair, and Multicultural Parents Association and parent, Erika Whyte. Balloon sculpting and face painting kept both our Upper School Community Life volunteers and our lower school children very busy. Barbecue fare, including hotdogs, hamburgers and lots of frozen treats provided by our dining hall service, Sage, kept everyone happily well-fed.
The Welcome Barbecue has historically been an event directed towards inviting new families in the racial minority to meet existing families in the racial minority. With an eye towards opening up the event to a broader definition of diversity, the MCPA chose to invite the whole school community to the event. Affinity type social events will also be made available throughout the year for African American/Black families, in order to celebrate our largest single diverse identifier.
