People of Color Conference 2004
December 2-4, 2004
Miami, FL

Eight members of the Shipley community attended the People of Color Conference in Miami, FL in December 2004. Head of Upper School, Tom Nammack, Assistant Head of Lower School, Luis Ottley, Upper School faculty, Jen Groeber and Middle School faculty, Brenda Leaks accompanied four Upper School students to the conference. Hosted by the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools), the 17th People of Color Conference and the 11th Student Diversity Leadership Conference were events that offered professional and personal development to all.  With presentations from the likes of Rita Moreno, Amy Tan and Richard Rodriguez, and smaller information sessions on a wide range of diversity topics, the opportunities for personal reflection, networking and idea sharing were endless.

The four student leaders returned to Shipley energized and empowered to share all they had learned. These Upper School students led the whole Upper School in a reflective activity where personal identifiers were used and issues of being in the majority or minority group were explored.
