People of Color Conference 2003
December 3-6, 2003
Honolulu Hawaii

Two members of the Shipley Diversity Committee attended the 16th annual People of Color Conference in Hawaii. Assistant Head of Lower School, Luis Ottley and Upper School English teacher, Sandi Richards, facilitated the workshop “Is My School Meeting the Needs of Its Students of Color?”, based on the dissertation research of Shipley students conducted by Ottley. The following is a description of their workshop from the NAIS website:

“Many Independent Schools spend significant time and resources examining issues of diversity. Often these efforts produce limited results, despite extensive discourse on the part of school community members. This workshop will explore Community-Based Action Research, a collaborative research model based on the assumption that all community stakeholders will engage in the inquiry process. Stakeholders acquire information, reflect on that information, and use it to transform or clarify their understanding of the issue under investigation. Finally, the school can move forward with concrete action steps. Participants will gain tools to initiate an action research project to address a pertinent diversity issue in their school.”
