Shipley believes that a well-educated person must be ethical and humane as well as knowledgeable. To this end, a Shipley education balances individual achievement with concern for others.
In order to provide a service learning experience for its students, the School integrates community service into the curriculum from the earliest grades. Throughout the School, it is common to see students working with each other or tutoring their peers. For example, older students in the Lower School serve as book buddies for children in the lower grades. Students in calculus or advanced French volunteer to help eighth-graders. Middle or Upper School students work with children in Lower School classrooms. Over the course of the year, Middle School students participate in a number of service projects incorporated in their advisory program. Each student volunteers for a variety of activities and is given opportunities to share his or her experiences with fellow classmates.
"What we notice is the genuine kindness of Shipley students. The School develops well-rounded people as well as high achievers."
The service component of the Shipley curriculum culminates in Senior Service Projects in which students spend the last month at Shipley volunteering in the non-profit sector. Organizations at which students have recently worked include a residence for families of critically ill children, a homeless shelter, a zoo, a library, a school for children with special needs, and an environmental action organization.
In everything we do, Shipley upholds and promotes moral integrity, a sense of personal achievement and worth, and compassion for others at school and in the larger community.
