Welcome Letter from Steve Piltch, Head of School

From Steve Piltch

Welcome--students, parents, alumni, and friends--to Shipley in cyberspace. We invite you to take the time to browse through this site and to become more familiar with our community.

If this is your first visit to Shipley, I envy you, remembering my own first experience of the richness of the School, the warmth of the welcome. If you know Shipley well, then you know, as my family and I do, that the richness and warmth we sensed at first are inherent in the community and increase and become deeper over time.

I hope you will look at our academic program and our arts, athletics, and service learning programs, all of which emphasize excellence. I hope you will see in the photographs of students, from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, not only their seriousness of purpose, but also their joy and excitement in learning. I urge you to look at the section on students and faculty because they represent the values of the School as it is. And I hope that you will look at our alumni, whose achievements are the proof of our success as well as theirs.

Through a rigorous academic program, Shipley has a long tradition of preparing students for college and for full participation in the world. We also have a long tradition of supporting diversity, of encouraging each student’s development as an individual. Well before the term “the whole child” was coined, the School’s faculty and staff made it their business to understand the physical, spiritual, and emotional growth and needs of each student. They still do.

I am proud to be the head of Shipley. I am proud to serve generous and supportive parents, alumni, faculty, and board members, all of whom work hard and well together to make this School better every day. I’m especially proud to serve the students themselves, with all their incredible talents, their capacity for hard work, their concern for others, and in all their variety.

I hope this Web site will help you to understand and share my pride and enthusiasm. Whether you are new to the School or an old friend, I welcome you and encourage you to get in touch with us directly. If there is any information that you would like to see included on the Web site or if you have any questions, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Steven S. Piltch
Head of School
