Diversity, equity, and inclusion work constantly evolves, never ends, and impacts every member of a community. Shipley’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan is both an immediate and multiyear effort. It is part of the School’s continued journey to look inward, strengthening trust within and for all members of our community. The purpose of the Plan is to help Shipley be a truly anti-racist and diverse educational institution that embraces social justice for, and offers genuine belonging to, people of all races, colors, ethnicities, sexual orientations, genders, religions, nationalities, and socioeconomic statuses.

In keeping with this vision, we recognize the immediate need to focus on the experience of our Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) members as we simultaneously advance the broader work of diversity, equity, and inclusion for all in the Shipley community. We:

• acknowledge the persistence of systemic racism, inequities shaped by all forms of discrimination, and injustices in our society;
• recognize that our school is not immune;
• apologize to anyone who has experienced racism at Shipley;
• acknowledge our responsibility to work to prevent these issues from impacting members of our community when they are at Shipley, recognize the need to address these issues when they do impact members of our community, and commit to learning from our past; and
• recognize our unique opportunity to prepare students to understand and navigate these issues by developing cultural competency, racial literacy, and to effectively address them as compassionate participants in the world.
