What is your favorite part about being an athlete at Shipley?
My favorite part about being on a team at Shipley is that the friendships I have made do not stop outside of practice. When I have a bad week, my teammates reach out to me to check-in. No matter your grade, everyone supports everyone.
What is your favorite part about being in the musical for Shipley?
My favorite part about being in the musical at Shipley is that the group and atmosphere are so energetic and fun. Going to practice always helps me relieve my stress or forget about anything I might have struggled with throughout my week.
What other activities do you do outside of school?
Outside of school, I take voice lessons, play piano, and play tennis.
What made you want to do both athletics and the musical at Shipley?
I have always loved performing and musical theater. I always take the opportunity to see shows with my family and love being a part of them. Last year, I did not do the musical and took the time to focus on crew. However, after hearing about the musical and seeing how much people loved it, I was quickly drawn to it. I decided to join the crew team because my brother Jacob tried it out in the fall of freshman year, and I wanted to be part of a team.
How do you find the balance between all of your activities at Shipley and outside of School?
I have a lot of activities outside of Shipley and extracurricular clubs every day including student government. While it is time-consuming, I wouldn’t give any of it up, and I still manage to find time to be with my friends and family.
When you came to Shipley did you consider yourself an athlete or a theater person? What do you consider yourself now? How did Shipley help shape the person you are today?
I never really thought of myself as just a theater person or just an athlete. What I like best about Shipley is that it encourages students to be well-rounded and to try new things. I have always enjoyed many different things even outside of theater and sports. However, when I first came to Shipley, I was hesitant to play sports because I feared I wouldn’t be good enough and wouldn’t be a good asset to the teams. Therefore, I chose to play tennis throughout middle school and freshman year because it was the one consistent sport in my life. I am so grateful that I decided to take a chance and try a new sport because I would have never gotten to be a part of the amazing friendships and support that the crew team provides.
What does the Shipley Motto, Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
When I find myself shying away from opportunities due to fear or lack of confidence, I use the Shipley motto to remind myself to be brave and make the most of everything I do.
