Meet Reed '19

Activities & Positions
I have played on the varsity baseball team for the last three years and am going to be a captain for my senior year. I have also been an active participant in SpeakUp (student/parent conversations and forums to focus on community issues). In addition, I have been a student leader and advisory board member since my freshman year. Finally, I am going to be representing Shipley as Co-Head of Community Life for the high school.

Favorite Club:
My favorite club is DECA. It is a young business competition, and students from around the country will pick a category (like marketing, finance, hospitality, and tourism) and compete to reach a spot in Nationals. I love it because both of my parents are in business and it feels like I am following in their footsteps.

Favorite Class:
My favorite class at Shipley thus far has been Chemistry Honors, which I took during my sophomore year. It was a very challenging course for me, but I thought it let me grow as a person because it made me increase my work ethic and focus. The interesting concepts along with the excellent teaching by Mr. Goren led to an exciting and fast-paced classroom every single day. Mr. Goren was always supportive throughout the process and pushed me to make sure I fully understood the material.

Favorite Shipley Memory:
My favorite Shipley memory is the day I spent visiting classes as I was going through the admissions process. Immediately the students at Shipley welcomed me like I had been going to this school for the whole year. It was great to see smiling faces in the halls and all throughout the school. That moment of feeling the community that Shipley offers is still my favorite moment.

Most Valuable Lesson Learned:
The most valuable lesson I have ever learned here is to try new things. I have never played an instrument nor legitimately sang before I came to Shipley. Once I got here, I realized that you need to try new things in life. I joined our choir with my best friend and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was not the best singer, but I forced myself to try something new.

Advice to New Students:
I would recommend doing a fall sport during your first year here. I played soccer my first year and pre-season allowed me to get a feel for the students and gain some friendships before I actually started at Shipley. It made me much more comfortable my first day at Shipley. Other than that, take part in clubs! Clubs allow you to experience things not taught in the classroom, and they are very fun and fulfilling.
