Madeline Miller '96
Madeline Miller has built a remarkable literary career reimagining the figures of ancient mythology. Her debut novel, The Song of Achilles, won the Orange Prize for Fiction; her second, Circe, became an international bestseller read by millions around the world. Miller traces her love of classical literature directly to Shipley, where she first read Homer in the original Greek. After earning her BA and MA in Classics from Brown University, she returned to Shipley to teach Latin and ancient history and founded the school's Shakespeare theater program before devoting herself fully to her writing.
