Carole Geneix — Using Thinking Routines With Works of Art to Deepen Student Understanding and Make Their Thinking Visible; Using Maker-Centered Learning Strategies to Engage Students in System Thinking And Interrogate the Status Quo

Session Information:
Session 1: Using Thinking Routines With Works of Art to Deepen Student Understanding and Make Their Thinking Visible

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore how they can use various works of art with thinking routines to engage students in meaningful discussions, make them connect with course content, and deepen their thinking. They will also examine how the process of documenting student thinking is an integral part of learning and, by making flow visible, allows for a stronger connection with content. A variety of Project Zero strategies from the Harvard Graduate School of Education will be used interactively throughout the workshop, including thinking routines from the Visible Thinking and Artful Thinking projects. This workshop will draw from practices used in middle and high school settings but is suitable for all levels and subject areas.

Session #2: Using Maker-Centered Learning Strategies to Engage Students in System Thinking And Interrogate the Status Quo

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore ideas and strategies of the Making Across the Curriculum project from Agency by Design that empower students to develop their agency and sense of belonging. They will then explore the JusticexDesign framework (pronounced "Justice by Design") that gives tools to students and teachers to interrogate the status quo in the curriculum and beyond. Participants should have basic supplies handy (paper, pens, recycling material, foil, etc.) so they can experience first-hand what "making" can bring to the classroom! This workshop will draw from practices used in middle and high school settings but is suitable for all levels and subject areas.
