"Made of this Earth" by Adrienne Beth Jenkins

"Made of this Earth" by Adrienne Beth Jenkins will be on display in Shipley's Speer Gallery from January 9 - February 24, 2017. The gallery is open to the public Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

About the Exhibition:
Made of This Earth fuses imagery of flora and fauna expressing the beauty and vibrancy of matter as part of nature’s cycles of birth, decay and regeneration. This series of colorful oil on canvas paintings is derived from 16th to early 17th century Dutch genre painting, particularly vanitas, where spiritual messages about mortality were depicted through the interplay of the objects of daily life with natural, organic and decaying matter: animals, skulls, bones, flowers. Development of the paintings was also influenced by prehistoric cave art when shamans experienced existence as an interconnected web of life engaged in an eternal dance of matter and spirit. The exhibition title Made of this Earth also references the use of oil paints derived from earth pigments and mixed with natural resins, reminding us of the transformative qualities of matter and the wonder and wildness of nature.
