Lower School Students Selected for National Choir

Two Shipley fifth graders, Elle Miller and Annabella Asimos, were recently selected to the OAKE (Organization of American Kodaly Educator’s) National Children’s Choir.

Every year, fourth and fifth-grade students from across the United States send in audition tapes demonstrating their vocal range, tone, oral skills, and ability to sing in tune, among other skills. Through a rigorous review process, a committee selects 150 students to participate in the OAKE National Children’s Choir.

The Choir members came together at the OAKE National Conference, held this year in Philadelphia, for three days of rehearsals with nationally-renowned conductor Fred Meads, Director of Vocal Studies at American Boychoir School. A culminating performance was held in the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall.

“It’s pretty amazing and inspiring for educators and students to have three days of making really beautiful, high-quality music,” said Lindsay Jackson, Shipley Lower School music teacher. “I’m so proud! It’s nice we can share in that together with people from all over the country.”
