PUBLIC/PRIVATE: The Photography of Chris Peters

The Speer Gallery invites you to see PUBLIC/PRIVATE, our current show of photography work by Chris Peters, on loan to Shipley from the West Collection. Consider how science and art work together in this artist’s process to deliver visually fascinating commentary on socio-economic realities.

The below excerpt is paraphrased from the Gravy Gallery press release, where this work was first shown.

Chris Peters constructs large-scale, site-specific camera obscuras in abandoned buildings. This process floods the rooms with a projection of the surrounding cityscape, creating a room-wide installation of imagery that Peters photographs. This documentation of abandoned spaces in contrast to the urban environment collapses the indoor and outdoor spaces, suggesting a reconsideration of urban decay.

Chris Peters was born in Shorewood, Wisconsin in 1978. He holds a BFA in Photography and Video and an MFA in Community Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
