Saving Lives Through Blood Donorship

Emily Scolnick ’22
For years, Shipley has held a blood drive each winter, but it was only four years ago when my family began partnering with the school to make the drive our own. Our drives are in memory of my grandmother, Carol Axelrod, who was treated for multiple myeloma and was dependent on blood transfusions for the last year of her life. Thanks to blood donors, our family was able to spend an extra year with my grandmother that we would not have had otherwise. My mother then started holding blood drives in my grandmother’s memory in 2008, and since then the drives have grown and we now hold four a year, including at Shipley.

Over the past couple of years, my family and I have put a lot more emphasis on recruiting students and other Shipley community members to get involved in these blood drives, and these efforts have been a big success.

The entire Shipley community is always so supportive, and it really means a lot to see everyone coming together to support this event!

This year’s blood drive was on Friday, February 28, and community members donated 131 pints of blood, 13 more than in previous years.
