School Community Gathers for the Return of Super Saturday

Like the leaves changing color and decorative pumpkins, some things are simply an integral part of fall. Super Saturday is one of those things! After being cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, Shipley’s annual event, held on Saturday, September 25, 2021, was back and better than ever.

The day included a carnival for Lower and Middle School students in the quad, an open mic event in the Commons for Middle and Upper School students, and varsity sports games. These exciting games included field hockey against Sacred Heart, girls’ tennis against Episcopal Academy, girls’ soccer against Merion Mercy, boys’ soccer against Cardinal O’Hara, and cross country competing in the annual George School Invitational off-campus.

Leading up to the event, the Upper School planned a Spirit Week complete with hallway decorations, a two-day cornhole tournament, an all-school assembly, and themed dress days throughout the week for both Middle and Upper Schools – including Pajama Day, Twin Day, and Tropical Thursday.

The carnival benefitted the Brain Tree School, and there were many opportunities for service hours. Livvy Kaliner ’22, co-president of the service committee, shares that “the service committee has invited all Upper School students to come and make posters to decorate for Spirit Week and to highlight our athletes playing on Saturday.” In addition, “Students [could] get involved on the actual day by signing up to run an activity for the carnival, which they receive service hours for, and coming to support the sports games.”

Super Saturday also marked the first time in nearly two years that the entire Shipley community could  gather as it did pre-pandemic. All School President Griffin Chulik ’22 shared his excitement, saying that “COVID-19 hindered our ability to unite as one, so I’m extremely excited to see everyone together in the stands watching our athletes.” Athletic Committee co-president Lauryn Redcross ’22 shared a similar sentiment, adding that “seeing the community back together and people supporting their friends at games will be awesome,” and asked everyone to “come out and support the Gators! Let’s have a fun Saturday!” And we did.
