Shipley Recognizes Indigenous Peoples’ Day

In each division at Shipley, students learned about the history and significance of indigenous peoples throughout North and South America. Though the state of Pennsylvania still celebrates Columbus Day, many other states officially recognize the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

In Lower and Middle Schools, students learned about the Lenni Lenape tribe, which originally inhabited Southeastern Pennsylvania before it was colonized by Europeans.

In Kristin Shipler’s Spanish II class, students learned about “El Día de la Raza” or “El Día de la Diversidad Cultural.” These days recognize the fusion of cultures that now compose what is known as Latin America, mainly African, Indigenous, and European influences. It’s a celebration of linguistic, racial and ethnic diversity.
