Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Dr. Gillin was my most influential teacher because she helped me gain confidence in a subject that I was weak in and at first not very interested in. She made history more than memorizing dates and people and actually helped us analyze the events and understand why they happened. She helped me feel more confident speaking up in class discussions, especially through graded Harkness discussions. After I finished her course she was still a teacher I would often stop by and say hello to.

What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
My most memorable experience at Shipley was my Think, Care, Act project in 5th grade. This is because it was the first hands-on project I did where I had complete control over exactly what I did. It was a project I chose for my love of horses and their well-being and appreciated being given the freedom to explore my interests early on.

What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
Shipley has provided me with a community in which I feel confident to try new things and to keep at it until I achieve what I want.

Complete this sentence: Shipley has prepared me to…
…voice my opinions. In 11th grade Honors Biology, I had a difference of opinion on a data sample than my lab group did. I tried to speak up and explain my evidence but they still did not agree. My teacher Ms. Willing encouraged me to continue to explain and push my evidence. After finding out I was correct, this gave me the confidence to speak up when you are not in the majority.

Reflections on your time at Shipley:
The people at Shipley have had a huge impact on my time there. Everyone has our best interest in mind and wants to help you achieve any goals and pursue your passions. A great example of this is when Ms. Gearhart stepped in to be the leader of CS Tutoring and Club that I created when all the CS teachers left. She told me she did not know anything about CS but she was happy to help me out. This shows that she just wanted to help me pursue a goal even though it had no benefit to her and she was not initially interested in computers. I appreciate her and other teachers dedicated to helping students even when it is not in their chosen field.

Shipley has prepared me for college in the sense of the variety of different assessments I have completed. We have done presentations, tests, discussions, labs, and many more interactive projects. We especially have done a variety of assessments in Mr. Kline's English class. I appreciate having exposure not only to analytical writing but learning how to present a novel, discuss it, or debate it. Being able to present knowledge in different formats is a skill I think will be helpful in college and beyond.
