Shipley’s Varsity Math Team Earns Top Marks in League Playoffs

On Friday, December 2, Shipley hosted the Philadelphia Area Math League for Independent Schools 2022 Playoffs. As a result, the Gators finished fifth out of ten teams in the group category and Bambi Tang ‘23 finished first in the individual category.

The math league includes Haverford, Baldwin, Agnes Irwin, Episcopal Academy, Westtown, Penn Charter, Springside Chestnut Hill, George School, Hill School, and Abington Friends. Math problems come from “any area of high school mathematics.”

The fall season consists of weekly, online matches against another school and alternates between group and individual events. The commitment of Shipley’s team is exemplary. On Green Weeks, students come in early at 7:45 am to compete.

“Our team’s strength is definitely that they are all about teamwork and working together really well,” said math team advisor Dr. Joachim Rebholz. “We won every round yesterday that was in a group format.”

Another highlight of the day was the career panel. Two college-aged students, including Shipley’s own Zach Cahoone ‘19, a computer science major at the University of Pennsylvania, spoke to students about pursuing careers in mathematics-related fields.

Members of the Shipley Swamp even stopped by to cheer on the team.

Congratulations to all of Shipley’s Varsity Math team members:
Hayden Andersen, Bambi Tang, Chris Yanney, Kevin Zheng, Joshua Cohen, Emily Kucharczuk, Richard Liu, Vance Yanney, Amber Feng, Hailey Li, Srijan Velamuri, Doris Du, and Anne Gu.
