Shipley Celebrates Lunar New Year with Musical Performance

At Shipley’s Upper School Assembly on February 3, 2023, the Asian Student Alliance and the Chamber Orchestra collaborated on a celebration of Lantern Festival, or the end of Lunar New Year. Lantern Festival promotes reconciliation, peace, and forgiveness, and is celebrated in China and many other Asian countries.

The Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Mr. Jhonnatan Mata, performed the Lunar New Year Overture, which was written by Chinese classical composer, Li Huanzhi, and arranged by the ensemble by Richard Liu ’25 and Bambi Tang ’23. Before the performance, the Asian Student Alliance leaders, Amber Feng ’24 and Anne Gu ’25, gave an overview about the piece’s importance and the celebratory cultural significance behind it.

Special thanks to Mr. Mata, Richard Liu, Bambi Tang, and all the student performers for their preparation and participation.
