What is your favorite part about being an athlete at Shipley?
My favorite part about being an athlete at Shipley is the bond I create with my teammates. I think that playing on a team here at Shipley is a very unique and special experience because the bonds that I have created with my teammates throughout the entirety of my high school career are so special to me.

What is your favorite part about being in the musical for Shipley?
Being in the musical has always been one of my favorite experiences here at Shipley. Similar to my answer before, I enjoy the friendships that I make during the process. For me, the musical is an escape from my academics and the daily stress that I deal with, and the musical allows me to step into another character and forget about everything else. Lastly, I think the hours of work and effort that everybody puts into this is so extraordinary and I am always so proud of the end result.

What other activities do you do outside of school?
Outside of school, I do a lot of extracurricular activities. I take voice and piano lessons while also dancing five days out of the week and performing in the Nutcracker every year.

What made you want to do both athletics and the musical at Shipley?
I started in both sports and the arts at a young age, and since then I have loved participating in both fields. Each time I get such different opportunities and experiences that are so exciting. Also, the people I get to work with are so passionate about what they do and it’s so inspiring to be around these people in both sports and the musical.

How do you find the balance between all of your activities at Shipley and outside of School?
Since I was a kid, I’ve always had a full schedule so this is not something new to me. However, I find joy in being busy because I would rather be doing things that I love instead of sitting around my house. I feel like that gives me the balance I need.

How does being a captain for your Varsity team correlate with being a leader in the musical?
I think there are a lot of similarities between the two because as a leader it’s my responsibility to help motivate and push the team/cast toward our end goal. I think also being able to be an inspiration and help others is so important as both a captain and leader.

When you came to Shipley did you consider yourself an athlete or a theater person? What do you consider yourself now? How did Shipley help shape the person you are today?
When I came to Shipley I was involved in many activities like performing in local shows and playing on the top soccer travel team. I considered myself a well-rounded person who loved to participate in many things, however, during my first year here I didn’t participate in the Middle School musical because I was so overwhelmed with my outside activities. Shipley has helped teach me that I can do both and still perform at my best while balancing everything else I do. Looking back on my growth from 7th to 11th grade, Shipley has taught me that I can pursue and excel in whatever I am passionate about and that I don’t just have to be labeled an athlete or artist. I can be both.

What does the Shipley Motto, Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
To me, Shipley’s motto means that you should always put yourself out there and have the courage to stand up and do something new and that it’s not something to be scared of. Being in both sports and the arts, it sometimes can be intimidating to get up and sing or be in the starting lineup for the team but the School’s motto reminds me that you should be brave and always try your best.
