Shipley Upper School Students Participate in Positive Paws Program

On Tuesday afternoons, about a dozen Shipley Upper School students travel to the Andrew Jackson School in South Philadelphia to participate in the Positive Paws After School Enrichment Club.

Positive Paws began in 2014 through the relationship between Shipley and Andrew Jackson Elementary School. The after-school program focuses on character development and emotional intelligence. Elements of Shipley's SEED program for lower school students are used to initiate conversation about feelings, and explore ways and/or practices to handle those feelings and emotions. Activities include worksheets that identify actions students currently do when they feel happy, sad, mad, etc.

Shipley students talk through those with the AJS students and discuss alternative and more productive actions to handle those emotions. The Shipley students spend most of their time with the AJS students talking about how they can take negative feelings and turning them into positive ones to be their best selves.
