Betsy Leschinsky - Librarian & SEED Teacher

Librarian & SEED Teacher

  • What do you enjoy most about being in the classroom?

I enjoy my role as the SEED teacher because I get to work with every student in the Lower School. This provides the opportunity to develop long-lasting relationships with the children as they move through the grades. In my role as a second teacher I enjoy supporting the classroom teachers in a variety of ways and assisting the students on an individual basis.

  • What do you love about Shipley?

I love the sense of confidence and well being the students develop in our small group setting. I love our dedication to service learning and helping others. I love that we devote time to developing character in our students. I have been a part of Shipley in some way for the past twenty years and it has become my second home and my second family.

  • What inspired you to choose education?

My father was an artist by trade but was a beloved lacrosse coach. He planted the seeds of caring and kindness towards children in me early on. Additionally, I have always loved working with children. Even at a very young age I was babysitting and working at day camps. My sister and I worked at Beth Hillel day camp when we were 12 and 13 years old, where a current Shipley parent was one of the two year olds in our group! I went to Wheelock College in Boston, a college devoted to early childhood education. Although I took a hiatus for several years and worked as a chef, I came back to education once I had my own children.

  • What is your favorite lesson, project or activity? Why?

My favorite unit in third grade is our immigration unit. Students learn by using research, an incredible simulation activity, and finally a trip to Ellis Island.
  • What is your favorite musical genre?

I love listening to my son’s band “Swift Technique” which is a fusion of hip-hop, funk and jazz.

  • Name one of your hobbies.

Quilting. And I am obsessed with yoga. In addition to teaching at Shipley I am a yoga instructor at Focus Fitness in Bryn Mawr.

  • What is your favorite quote?

“Promote what you love, instead of bashing what you hate.”

  • What is your favorite season?

I love summer, I love the heat!!

  • Where was the best vacation you ever had?

A trip to New Mexico a few summers ago, I loved the natural beauty and all that dry heat!
