Shipley's Elvis Zhang Receives Art Recognitions

Shipley’s Elvis Zhang has recently received several honors and awards in the field of the arts.

In January, Elvis was named a finalist for design arts in the National YoungArts Foundation Program and traveled with 170 other students from across the county to Miami to participate in National YoungArts Week. During the week Zhang participated in master classes and workshops with internationally renowned leaders in their field. The National YoungArts Foundation also serves as the exclusive nominating agency for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, the country's highest honor for young artists. Those awards will be announced at a later date.

In February, Zhang received three Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, given by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are some of the most well-known and prestigious for teenagers in the United States.

Zhang received a silver medal for his work “The Green Cube,” an architectural piece made of plastic shipping pallets with a bicycle and generator attached, that when pedaled, the structure lights up as electricity is conducted. Zhang erected this piece in a public park in Hong Kong.

He also received a silver medal for his architectural drawing “Duo Strips.” Duo Strips is a modern tourist center design for the town of Capranica, Italy.

Zhang’s “Geometric Experiment” earned an honorable mention. This 3D-printed piece was inspired by the Beth Sholom Congregation and the Museum of Islamic Art.

Congratulations, Elvis!
