Shipley Middle School Students Featured in SHARE Newsletter Volunteer Spotlight

This article originally appeared in the SHARE January 2016 newsletter and was reprinted with permission.

Twenty-two middle school students from the Shipley School, located in Bryn Mawr, have been visiting Share regularly since the start of the current school year. This high-energy group has developed a quick assembly- line technique, mastering the art of box making and box filling. Share relies on volunteers to assemble and pack the boxes that it distributes by the thousands each month. These containers hold food for low-income seniors, and our healthy and affordable Food Package Program.

With a radio tuned to their favorite station, and under the guidance of faculty volunteers, these 6th, 7th, and 8th-graders are contributing time and services in support of Share’s critical mission.

They’ll be returning once each month for the balance of their term. Math teacher and sports coach Jay Jennings, who was among the faculty members accompanying the students, says “Fighting hunger is a full-time job...” In a city with a poverty rate that hovers at 25 percent of the population, the battle against hunger needs all the reinforcements it can muster.

A big shout out to the Shipley community–students, teachers, administrators, and parents – for your time and contributions toward food justice.
