How Shipley Shaped Me
Being the first transguy to come out during my time at Shipley was an interesting adventure. Ms. Sterling helped me with my coming out process with students, teachers, administration, and colleges. Coming out has made me more confident and comfortable in my own shoes, preparing me to be more independent in both college and life. I am extremely grateful that I received so much help and support throughout my high school experience.

Most Memorable Experience
My most memorable experience at Shipley was when I came out. It was the end of sophomore year and I decided to come out at school, so my transition to the next year would be easier. I told only a handful of friends my chosen name and one day one of them called me "Ryan" for the first time in SEED class. I left quickly pretending like nothing happened, but Ms. Sterling called me back in because my classmates wanted to know what was going on. I was taken aback when everyone in class supported me and wanted to respect both my new name and pronouns. I did not expect such an amazing response from the whole grade and the school. Many teachers helped me through this journey and I could not have done it without them.

Plans for Fall 2017
In the fall, I will be attending Emerson College for film and video production

What is your future ambition?
I hope to become a producer or director of narrative films. I have always loved the arts and writing stories. After making many videos for various Spanish projects, I noticed how much I love making and editing videos. During the summer, I took a three-week intensive film course at the WHYY Public Media Commons in the city and that course helped me determine that I wanted to pursue a career in film.
