Meet Elie '19

Activities & Positions
I’ve played varsity soccer and lacrosse since my freshman year (and I will be a captain this upcoming year for the soccer team!). Also, I’ve served as a community life representative for my grade for the past three years (I have been elected to be a Community Life Association Head for next year as well). In addition, I’ve been a part of action research, yearbook, and DECA (business club), all since freshman year. I am also part of the fighting hunger/Philly community service club, and I’ve played the piano since Lower School. Outside of school, I am an ambassador for Alex’s Lemonade Stand and a member of CHOP’s youth advisory council, which works to improve patient life within the hospital.

Favorite Club:
My favorite club is action research, which works in conjunction with UPenn to identify problems in school communities and use research to implement change. Our group has focused on reducing stress and pressures in student life, and I have found it to be interesting and rewarding to plan changes and stay involved to see their impact in the community over time.

Favorite Class:
My favorite class I have taken at Shipley so far has been Pre-Calculus Honors. Although I have not always considered math to be one of my favorite subjects, the teacher's dedication to teaching and unique ability to combine real-world applications with math problems has helped me appreciate the material and truly enjoy the learning process.

Favorite Shipley Memory:
When I think of Shipley, I think of the amazing community of students, teachers, and families. One of the best things I’ve experienced here was having the opportunity to bring the community together in supporting Alex’s Lemonade Stand earlier this year. In the span of one day, the community worked together to raise over $1,000!

Most Valuable Lesson Learned:
The most valuable lesson I have learned during my time here is that it’s okay to fail as long as you learn something. I first heard this from my fourth-grade teacher, and have since continued to learn it as I have grown as a student at Shipley.

Advice to New Students:
If I could give myself advice as I first started Shipley, it would be to take risks and try new things - the community will support you! I would definitely tell new students that they should not be afraid to be themselves and should get to know their teachers because they truly care about students as individuals. I highly recommend attending community events such as Super Saturday (community/athletic event in the fall), Swamp Night (an athletic event in the winter), Empty Bowls Dinner (community service project) and the junior-senior touch football game.
