How Shipley Shaped Me
Shipley has done a lot in terms of college preparation. The college counseling office begins preparing students for the college process early in high school. A good example of this is the mandatory PSAT my class had to take sophomore year. Taking this test allowed me to see what standardized testing would be like. During junior year, all students began to fill out the Common App, which was a very excellent way of making the college process less stressful. Lastly, the college counseling office does an excellent job of being available to help students with essays, provide advice, and help students get into top-level colleges. One college representative I met with claimed that Shipley had the best college counseling team they had ever seen. In addition to the excellent team of college counselors, Shipley provides its students with a top-notch education that I was very lucky to have since PreK. In the classroom, students are challenged to work their hardest and to work confidently. Although challenging, the school work I did at Shipley contributed to me getting into my dream college.

Shipley provides opportunities to take risks in a lot of different ways. At Shipley, students are pushed to their limits in order to perform their best when the time comes. Shipley’s excellent athletics allows students to try their hardest and to keep improving to gain success. Shipley’s theater department urges students to try out for the school play to share their talents with the rest of the community. In arts and theater, Shipley wants every student with a natural gift to share with the community, whether it is at assemblies, talent shows, or the school musical. One “Aha” moment I had was attending the school musical for the first time in high school. I went to the showing of “Hairspray” and it was a phenomenal performance. Before this moment, I never realized what great talents my classmates had until I saw it in action with my classmates and friends.

Who was your most influential teacher and why?
My fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Van Horn, was my most influential teacher because of her creative way of teaching American history. Also, Mrs. Van Horn was very supportive of her students if they were upset or having trouble.

Most Memorable Experience
My most memorable moment was winning the gold medal for the Men’s 200 Freestyle Relay at the Friends Schools League Swimming Championships. This moment was so great because out of all four years of high school swimming at Shipley, we never had a relay win a gold medal. The race was really close, but when we won, my teammates and I could not control our emotions because the moment just seemed too good to be true. That day made me so happy because all of our hard work had finally paid off for a gold medal.

Plans for Fall 2018
I will be attending Villanova University and majoring in either accounting or finance.

What does “Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing” mean to you?
It means to have courage and grace when performing a challenging task because courage allows us to see the impossible as possible and grace allows us to have thankfulness for completing a challenging task.
