Shipley Adds Winter Indoor Track Program

Shipley has announced the addition of Indoor Track as a new sports program available to Upper School student-athletes beginning this winter. The Indoor Track program – a two-year pilot – will be led by Coaches Antonio Davis and Brandon Jacobs. The team will have the privilege to train on-campus, as well as at the state-of-the-art Upper Merion Community Center (UMCC) in King of Prussia. Throughout its inaugural season, the team will compete in five meets.

“We are pleased to add Indoor Track to our Shipley winter sports offerings for the 2019-20 season,” said Shipley Athletics Director Mark Duncan. “This in itself is cause for excitement, but offering this new program at a great local facility (UMCC) coupled with bringing the coaching talents of Antonio Davis to Shipley’s coaching staff, as well as Brandon Jacobs in a new role, makes this announcement even better.”

Shipley’s Upper School athletics program provides the opportunity for each and every student to participate in championship-caliber varsity programs. The Indoor Track program will join the growing roster of over twenty varsity programs during three sports seasons for Upper School students. The addition of the new program, along with its leading coaches, fosters Shipley’s ongoing commitment towards character building and supporting students in attaining the highest level of success on and off the playing field.

Antonio Davis, a Pennsylvania State University alum, was a four-time NCAA All-American, qualified to compete for a spot on two US Olympic Track and Field Teams, and was Penn State’s first individual Big Ten Gold Medalist. He is also a Penn Relays record holder and was recently honored for holding the longest-standing record at the Penn Relays – the College Men’s Triple Jump record set in 1993.

“I am extremely excited and honored to bring track and field to The Shipley School for the first time in history,” said Coach Antonio Davis. “The Shipley environment is a perfect fit for me as we are both advocates for children and positive education. Track and field has given so much to me in terms of athleticism, health and fitness, as well as paving the way for my education. I look forward to helping Shipley athletes continue to be happy, healthy, and the best version of themselves through track and field.”

Brandon Jacobs, Shipley’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion, is a graduate of The College of Wooster where he participated in the long jump, triple jump, and the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. He was both an Assistant Indoor Track and Field Coach and the Associate Head Indoor Track and Field Coach at The Hill School in Pottstown, PA.
