Sustainable Shipley

Sustainability is an institutional priority, and we are proud of our efforts to reduce waste production and energy consumption. Shipley has made significant measurable impacts with facilities upgrades and a transformation of school practices in recent years. These efforts reflect our commitment to individual and collective well-being, and our dedication to inspiring our students to be responsible global citizens.

Fall 2015

Opening of Silver LEED-Certified Commons
Solar panels, rainwater harvesting, green construction materials, and optimal use of natural lighting helped Shipley earn a Silver LEED certification for the Piltch Commons.

Spring 2018

Switch to Renewables 
In a show of commitment to sustainability, Shipley began using electricity provided by 100% renewable power sources.

Winter 2019

Green Restaurant Certification
Shipley’s Avery Silverman Dining Hall received three-star certification as a Green Restaurant®, based on energy and water conservation, menu choices, procurement of food, composting, and waste reduction.

Summer 2019

LED Lights Installed in Middle School
In a major upgrade, 50% of lighting in the West Middle School was upgraded to LEDs.

Fall 2019

Water Bottle Ban 
Shipley committed to not providing single-use plastic water bottles at All School Events.

Sustainability by the Numbers

52% reduction in the amount of waste we send to the landfill.

65% increase in the amount of waste we compost.

100% of our electricity comes from renewable sources.

75% of lighting in the Upper School are LEDs, which cut energy use by 80% and last 25 times longer than incandescent.

50% of lighting in the Middle School are LEDs.

$100K per year reduction in electricity bills with LEDs.

The Shipley School is a private, coeducational day school for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students, located in Bryn Mawr, PA. Through our commitment to educational excellence, we develop within each student a love of learning and a desire for compassionate participation in the world.
