Shipley Community Shows Compassion in Action

Brody '25 and his family are showing their compassion in action by participating in an assembly line that makes plastic face shields for first responders and nurses in their community. They collect the 3D-printed frames, cut them apart, and sand them. Then they hand the masks off to someone who delivers them to local hospitals.

Jill Keeney Tuzio '10, an oncology certified registered nurse at Penn Medicine, credits Shipley's rigorous academics and strong athletics for providing her with a solid foundation of resiliency, leadership, and courage. Renzo '26 and Weslan '28
Renzo and Weslan have been busy participating in many compassion in action activities! The brothers are sewing face masks for use at local hospitals and other health-care facilities, making care packages for health-care workers, virtually reading stories for #savewithstories, and showing their support for essential workers with yard signs.

Shipley's Girls' Lacrosse Team
Shipley's girls' lacrosse team, along with Eyekonz Sports and Conestoga High School's lacrosse program, recently launched The Lacrosse Village Initiative. The Initiative aims to "harness the strength and compassion of the greater lacrosse community to show gratitude for essential employees and to provide for families in need." The student-athletes are putting together meal, hygiene, and appreciation kits, creating thank you cards, and donating their time, talents, and money for those in need.

Todd Kelley '92, Shipley Alumnus
Since 2013, Todd Kelley ’92 and his company, Graffiti Removal Experts, have been cleaning up Philadelphia neighborhoods and transforming the lives of formerly homeless and incarcerated individuals by giving them opportunities to work. Bradford Everman, Shipley Parent
On April 28, the Navy's Blue Angels and the Air Force's Thunderbirds flew over the region to honor health-care workers working on the front lines of the coronavirus epidemic. Shipley parent Col. Bradford Everman was one of the lead pilots. Read more.

When Shipley STEAM teachers Paul Hermans and Sean Legnini '07 learned about the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment in local hospitals, they jumped at the chance to use their expertise to live Shipley's mission of Compassionate Participation in the World. When Shipley junior Josh Harycki noticed a lack of awareness around the COVID-19 precautions in his peers, he and a few friends created the Social Distancing Pledge to educate and encourage others to practice responsible social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Josh feels Shipley inspires students to think about what they can do for the community, to take action, and be a changemaker.
