Sutton Grossinger '21: Leading with Courage, Confidence, and Compassion

Jared Scott Tesler
All-School President Sutton Grossinger ’21 knows a thing or two about leadership.

A “lifer” at Shipley, Grossinger previously served as Junior Class President (“I found this position very rewarding, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to represent my classmates and make positive change in the community,” she recalls), founded the Classics Club, and presented at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education’s School Participatory Action Research Collaborative Conference on behalf of Shipley’s Action Research Team.

“Shipley really stresses the importance of being involved in the community and pursuing one’s passions,” Grossinger says. “Outside of Student Government, there are numerous opportunities to be a leader at Shipley—from cheering on teammates, to leading by example in the classroom, to participating in community service, to being involved in a theatrical production.”

As All-School President, Grossinger’s many responsibilities include leading Upper School Assemblies and speaking at All-School Assemblies, organizing and overseeing school-wide events, and sitting on the Judicial Board—a group that determines appropriate actions for students who break the Shipley Honor Code. “Above all,” she adds, “continuing to strengthen the sense of community that makes Shipley such an incredible place.”

It is a place where, Grossinger says, she has looked up to former All-School Presidents as role models, a place where she has always felt empowered to challenge herself in each and every way.

“It means the world to me to have been elected this year’s All-School President. I’m so honored that my fellow classmates and teachers have entrusted me with this position,” she says. “I’ll do my very best to give back to Shipley—a community that’s helped me grow into the student and person I am today.”
