Activities & Positions: What activities and sports are you involved in? How many years have you participated? Do you hold any leadership positions?

I play on the girls’ varsity basketball team, and I have participated on that team since I arrived in the 8th grade at Shipley. Going into my senior year, this is my second year as a co-captain of the team. During the fall season, I participate in fall fitness in order to get in shape and work out in preparation for the winter basketball season. Another activity I am involved in is the Black Student Union. I was elected as President of the Black Student Union for the 2020-2021 year. I have been in the BSU since the 9th grade.

Favorite Club: What’s your favorite club and why? What do you do in the club?
My favorite club is BSU. The reason why I love being a part of this club is because I have lots of fun while I also feel like I’m getting a lot done to better the school in diversity work. I look forward every year to planning the Black History assemblies during February because of how we really get to present and use our voices. During most club meetings, we use our time either talking about black issues in America or talking about ways we can attack issues facing black students at school.
Favorite Class: What’s your favorite class at Shipley? What do you like about the subject and the teacher? Did you always enjoy this subject, or did it take you by surprise?
My favorite class is Biology. I love this class because of all the hands-on lab experiments and the way the class is taught. I like the subject because we learn about a lot of different things including different species as well as things on smaller scales. I like that the class is very free-flowing where the teacher presents lessons and we get to ask questions as we go along. I was expecting to enjoy this class because I’ve always enjoyed most of my science classes.
Favorite Shipley Memory: What do you think of when you think of Shipley? What’s one of the best things you’ve experienced here?
When I think of Shipley I think of leadership. The leaders here who have roles as coaches and teachers have pushed me to lead in many different situations on and off the court. For example, coming into my first year in the 8th grade I would have never thought I would have applied to be President of the Black Student Union and actually get the position. I’ve also learned more about using my voice and speaking up during times when necessary. One of the best things I’ve experienced here was winning a State Championship my 9th grade year. My team and I worked really hard that entire year so it felt great that it paid off in the long run. I still remember to this day what it felt like after the final buzzer rang.

Most Valuable Lesson Learned: What have you learned during your time here?
I have learned about hard work, discipline and time management. I’ve learned that in order to accomplish goals that I have for myself in and out of the classroom all three of those qualities are key. In order to be the successful student athlete that I want to be I’ve worked to really key in and master all of these things while here. Hard work came the easiest because for me it’s basically showing the effort and endurance. Discipline is so important because without that there is no structure and stability. Lastly, time management plays in by being able to focus on juggling on having to get a lot of important things done.

Advice to New Students: What advice would you give yourself back when you started at Shipley? What tips would you pass on to new students? Are there any activities/traditions they should be sure to take part in?

The advice I would give myself is to not worry as much, and also be open to trying new things and taking big steps in areas you’re passionate about. I would also tell myself that it’s okay to be nervous and it’s okay to make mistakes because I was adjusting to something brand new. I would pass on these same tips to new students because I think it’s important to be confident in yourself but to also be comfortable in vulnerability. I would say definitely come to Super Saturday and Swamp Night because those are the best days over the year for most people. At these events, there is truly something for everyone, including activities for lower schoolers watching the games.
