Activities & Positions: What activities and sports are you involved in? How many years have you participated? Do you hold any leadership positions?

I am a member of the Varsity Men’s Basketball and Baseball teams. I have been on the Varsity Baseball team for 4 years. The Varsity Men’s Basketball team for 1 year, and have been elected to be a captain of the basketball team next season. I am also a Head Editor of The Beacon, which is the school newspaper.
Favorite Club: What’s your favorite club and why? What do you do in the club?
My favorite club is the Debate Club because our meetings and competitions provoke meaningful and challenging discourse which makes for a fantastic and engaging experience.

Favorite Class: What’s your favorite class at Shipley? What do you like about the subject and the teacher? Did you always enjoy this subject, or did it take you by surprise?
My favorite class at Shipley is Dr. Gillin’s Honors U.S. History course. The subject of our country’s history, both the good and the bad, made for amazing Harkness discussions and other collaborative activities. Dr. Gillin was a fantastic teacher and leader for our class, as she was always available, helping me to reinforce the ideas and material that had previously been covered in classroom discussion.
Favorite Shipley Memory: What do you think of when you think of Shipley? What’s one of the best things you’ve experienced here?
When I think of Shipley, I think of all the great people I have met during my four years at the school, including friends, teachers, administrators, and families who have created such an impressive academic and institutional community.
Most Valuable Lesson Learned: What have you learned during your time here?
During my time at Shipley, the most valuable lesson I have learned is to ask for help. For much of my academic career, I have been reluctant to raise my hand and ask questions for fear of embarrassment or sounding unintelligent. My experience at Shipley has shown me that asking questions is part of education. Learning how to engage with others, admitting you don’t get it, and accepting help has become the most valuable skill that I have learned during my time at Shipley.
Advice to New Students: What advice would you give yourself back when you started at Shipley? What tips would you pass on to new students? Are there any activities/traditions they should be sure to take part in?
Reach out! Shipley is a small, tight-knit community. Please go out and meet as many students, teachers, and other faculty as possible, as this experience will award you a better understanding of what Shipley is all about and a base network which you can expand during your continued tenure at Shipley.
