Activities & Positions:  What activities and sports are you involved in? How many years have you participated? Do you hold any leadership positions?

Throughout the three years that I have spent in the Upper School at Shipley, I have participated in many activities and clubs. I have been involved in Glee Club since my freshman year. In addition, during my freshman year, I participated in the Black Student Union and the Home Economics Club. My sophomore year, I joined the Art Club and continued to participate in Glee. As a junior, I participated in both Glee and Art Club, while also joining the Technology Student Association, a competition team dedicated to problem solving.

I held a position as a defensive player on the Varsity Girls Field Hockey Team during my freshman and sophomore years. In addition, I played on the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team my freshman, sophomore, and the beginning of my junior season before having to cease due to injury.

I’ve held several leadership roles.  I assist my volleyball coach in an encore club, teaching the basics of the sport to lower school students. The summer following my freshman and sophomore years, I worked as a camp counselor at the Shipley Enrichment Camp. Lastly, during my junior year, I served as an Upper School Summer Bridge counselor, where I worked to provide support and information to incoming freshmen who did not attend Middle School at Shipley.

Favorite Club: What’s your favorite club and why? What do you do in the club?

My favorite club is the Glee Club with Mr. Casilla. It has remained my favorite club because of the diversity of the singers and the ongoing positivity that flows throughout the environment. This club consists of students of all four grade levels. In Glee, I sing in the Alto section.

Favorite Class: What’s your favorite class at Shipley? What do you like about the subject and the teacher? Did you always enjoy this subject, or did it take you by surprise?

My favorite class that I have taken so far at Shipley has been my Chemistry I Honors class with Mr. Goren that I took my sophomore year. Although it was one of my most difficult courses, Mr. Goren brought enthusiasm and energy to the classroom every day and made learning the subject fun. I have always enjoyed studying the sciences, however, at the end of the school year, I was surprised by my newfound love for the subject.

Favorite Shipley Memory: What do you think of when you think of Shipley? What’s one of the best things you’ve experienced here?

When I think of Shipley I think of our school spirit. My favorite memory would have to be Super Saturday my sophomore year. Super Saturday is an all-day community event during which the Upper School sports teams are celebrated in addition to carnival activities for the lower grades. That year, I volunteered at the carnival in the morning and played a very competitive and intense field hockey game in the afternoon. I then returned later in the evening to watch and support the varsity boy’s soccer team play “under the lights” which was a very cheerful and joyous experience.

Most Valuable Lesson Learned: What have you learned during your time here?

The most valuable lesson that I have learned at Shipley, is to get to know your teachers and not to be afraid to seek their assistance. I have had some of my most beneficial and rewarding conversations with my teachers during these sessions.

Advice to New Students: What advice would you give yourself back when you started at Shipley? What tips would you pass on to new students? Are there any activities/traditions they should be sure to take part in?

I would tell my past self and new students not to be afraid to join different clubs and sports teams that are of interest, although they might be outside of a comfort zone. Fulfilling this will lead to personal development and the opportunity to get to know many students with similar passions.
