DEI Family Committees Host Book Groups

On Wednesday, March 10, Middle and Upper School caregivers and faculty convened on Zoom for a virtual Book Club meeting, organized by the Shipley MS/US Family DEI Committee. Parents Kelly Welch, Jennifer Flannelly, and Jennifer Henry selected the text, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s Stamped from the Beginning for the inaugural meeting. Participants also had the option of reading the young adult companion version by Kendi and Jason Reynolds. Welch, who teaches about race, ethnicity, and social justice at Villanova, facilitated break-out groups and a large-group discussion with about fifteen participants. Together, participants discussed parts of the text that informed, challenged, and resonated with them on a person level.

If you would like to join the MS/US Family DEI Committee Book Club and/or would like to suggest a title for the next get-together (which will likely take place in May), please email Lila Corgan. If you have or would like to read Stamped and missed the March 10 Book Club, the Lower School DEI Family Committee will be meeting on April 20 to discuss the same text! Please email Claire Grillo for more information.
