Shipley Announces Next Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

July 28, 2021

Dear Shipley Community,

After an extensive national search, I am delighted to announce that Dr. Reginald “Reggie” Davenport will be Shipley’s next Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Reggie brings deep experience as an educator and administrator and is clearly committed to furthering the work in this area at Shipley.

Reggie has more than 20 years of experience in K-12 education as a teacher, district administrator, and principal at Maxon Middle School and Franklin Middle School. For the last five years, he has worked as an educational and equity consultant, mentoring and coaching teachers and instructional leaders. His areas of research and publication include teacher leadership, developing cultural competence in students, and culturally responsive school leadership. Reggie earned a doctorate in Educational and Organizational Leadership from Penn’s Graduate School of Education (GSE), a Masters in Education Administration and Supervision from Seton Hall University, and a BA in History from Jersey City State College. Reggie is the proud parent of two independent school graduates.

As educators, students, families, and alumni we are responsible to each other to live our school mission and motto -- and in doing so guide students to be compassionate participants in the world. Reggie has devoted his career to doing precisely this. For Reggie, the often-challenging issues inherent in diversity, equity, and inclusion work are not theoretical; they are his life's work. His expertise and the mud he has accumulated on his boots as a teacher, administrator, and parent will serve him and Shipley well.

Reggie is looking forward to joining the Shipley community and shared: “I truly believe that the process of teaching and learning is a profoundly human endeavor that leans heavily on the relationships we build with students, their families, and each other. I am excited about the opportunity to establish and nurture these critical relationships with all members of the Shipley family as we engage in this challenging but essential work."

I am deeply grateful to our Search Advisory Committee and everyone who participated in the search. During his visit to Shipley, Reggie met with students, teaching colleagues, administrators, parents, and alumni. Across the community, feedback reflected Reggie’s experience and obvious passion for and commitment to this work.

Reggie has already felt the warmth and commitment of the Shipley community and he is looking forward to being on campus and meeting everyone (colleagues, students, and families) as we begin to return to Shipley next month. Please join me in welcoming Reggie Davenport to the Shipley community.
