Meet Janine '21

Janine '21
Years at Shipley: 14

Please list your activities and any positions held:
Volleyball, Tennis (7th grade), Human Psyche Club, Criminology Club, Art Club, Horseback Riding

Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Mr. Frankel because he taught me how to enjoy math. It was one of my best classes academically and I thoroughly enjoyed learning.

What was your favorite class and why?
Either Creative Writing or Comparative Anatomy and Neuroscience because I'm extremely interested in both of these subjects and I think both curriculums rose to my expectations. I really enjoy thinking creatively and being able to articulate my thoughts into interesting stories and I'm absolutely baffled by the brain. Mr. Clement does a really great job of covering many subjects with just enough detail to both satisfy and intrigue you.

What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
Probably the Think, Care, Act project in fifth grade. It was my first experience with direct service outside of Shipley and it was very educational.

Complete this sentence: Shipley has prepared me to… take on college curriculum.

Reflections about Shipley:
Shipley has a rigorous education system. I always found myself worrying about an assignment, doing homework, or preparing for an assessment. I believe that the pressure and expectations Shipley held me to prepare me for the level I will be held to in college. I know a lot of the students whose high schools go easy on them have a very rough first-year experience.

One of the best opportunities I took at Shipley was the Galapagos Island trip. I thought that going on a trip abroad with my classmates would be a terrible time, however, I think I made lifelong friends and had once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I also thought the trip would be endless education, but it was a good balance of vacation and education. So it felt like time and money well spent.
