MS Science Olympiad Team Wins Eight Medals at Regional Competition

Shipley’s Middle School Science Olympiad teams participated in the 4th Annual Eagle Invitational at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg, PA on February 12.

Combined, the teams finished with a team-record eight medals and Team A earned a 7th place finish out of 36 teams from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. 


Congratulations to the following Middle School Science Olympiad students who earned medals in their respective categories:

First Place - Write It Do It - Nick Mazzeo & Rohail Ahmad
One student will write a description of a set of objects and how to build it, and then the other student will attempt to reconstruct the set of objects from this description.

First Place - Meteorology - Alex Mazzeo & Nina Letts
Participants use scientific process skills and quantitative analysis to demonstrate an understanding of the factors that influence world climate and climate change through the interpretation of climatological data, graphs, charts, and images.

Fourth Place - Anatomy and Physiology - Lucas van Binsbergen & Lilla Tsvetkov
Participants are assessed on their understanding of the anatomy and physiology for the human Nervous, Sense Organs, and Endocrine systems.

Fifth Place - Solar System - Alex Mazzeo & Lily Pressman
Students demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of planet formation and structure in our solar system and how it relates to that observed in extrasolar systems

Sixth Place - Crave the Wave - Nick Mazzeo & Ashley McCauley
Competitors must demonstrate knowledge and process skills needed to solve problems and answer questions regarding all types of waves and wave motion.

Sixth Place - Electric Wright Stuff - Alex Mazzeo & Finn Buckley
Prior to the tournament teams design, construct, and test free-flight electric-powered monoplanes to achieve maximum time aloft.

Sixth Place - Green Generation - Lilla Tsvetkov & Rikki Teicher
Students demonstrate an understanding of general ecological principles, the history and consequences of human impact on our environment, solutions to reversing trends, and sustainability concepts.

Sixth Place - Mousetrap Vehicle - Lily Pressman & Henry Tornetta
Teams design, build and test one vehicle using one or two mousetrap(s) as its sole means of propulsion to reach a target as quickly and accurately as possible.

The Science Olympiad teams will compete next in the Southeast Regional Tournament on March 19. Success in the Regional Tournament will see the team move on to the State Tournament on April 30th.
